It was 4:40 am and I woke to swoosh, swoosh, swoosh, swoosh. I got up, went to the bathroom, and came back to bed only to be awake enough to now be focusing on the swoosh, swoosh sound.
What is that? I got up quietly so as not to wake my husband who was snoring away. I slid open the sliding door and stepped out onto our balcony overlooking the pool. As I peer down to the pool area and the walkways lined with lush tropical plants surrounding the pool, I spy a lone man with rubber boots on with a mop dangling from his hands as he pushes it first right, then left, then right, then left never stopping until he needs to squeeze out the water into a pail, and then continue onward.
I sat on the balcony for about 20 minutes as the sky began to lighten up, listening the rhythmic sound the mop was making. I went back to bed and dozed off about 5:13. Around 7am we woke to warm, partly cloudy skies. I walked out to the balcony and gazed down at walkways by the pool, they were clean, dry, and ready for everyone and anyone from guests to staff to move about freely.
You always know in the back of your mind that resorts operate 24/7, but it was that early morning swooshing sound and seeing this very patient, caring staff member, quietly doing his job to appreciate that when guests are enjoying and vacationing, the carefree moments are diligently created by caring and capable staff that often go unnoticed.
